Automated Adaptability Analysis using the Multimap Method: A Scalable Approach to Building Transformation aligned with EU Standard EN 17680

Svein Bjørberg
R&D Manager, NBEF
How adaptable are our buildings to new uses, and how can we measure that efficiently? This session introduces the MultiMap Method, an innovative approach for assessing building adaptability across entire real estate portfolios. Based on twelve spatial and technical parameters and aligned with EU Standard EN 17680:2023, the method automatically identifies the most feasible reuse options for existing buildings, from office-to-residential conversions to mixed-use transformations.
Through real-world case studies, including a hospital-to-commercial transformation, participants will see how this data-driven tool supports circularity, reduces embodied carbon, and enables early, evidence-based decisions. The MultiMap Method offers a scalable way to turn sustainability goals into actionable strategies for adaptive reuse and smarter portfolio management.

Circular Business Case for (Re)Construction

Ir. Jaap Wijnja
Principal Lecturer and Researcher, Hanze University of Applied Sciences
This session shows how circular principles can strengthen business cases in construction and renovation. With the sector using over 50% of raw materials in the Netherlands, circularity is key for climate goals and resource efficiency.
Through cases like the Venlo City Office, KaVA (“Office Full of Trash”), and Energyhub-050, participants will see how reuse, adaptability, and healthy materials create both environmental and financial value. The session also addresses collaboration across supply chains and the impact of EU sustainability reporting (CSRD). Attendees will leave with practical tools to assess circular strategies and make informed choices in the built environment.

The Changing Landscape of Work

Asaël Akkerman
Chief Strategy Officer, Workplaced
Workplace strategist Asaël Akkerman explores how lean management, globalisation, automation and AI have transformed organisational structures over the past decades. Using Mintzberg’s framework, he explains how the decline of middle management has eroded “workplace fabric knowledge”, the tacit understanding of how work really happens, from team dynamics to informal collaboration.
Today, AI-driven systems are increasingly shaping decisions about productivity, culture and space, yet often without the human context once provided by middle managers. This gap is especially visible in the ongoing debate around hybrid work and return-to-office strategies, where leadership expectations and employee realities frequently diverge.
Asaël shows how organisations can regain this missing insight. By capturing real-time employee sentiment, work patterns and space usage, platforms like Workplaced help HR, FM, IT and Real Estate teams make more informed, people-centred decisions about the future of work.

Construction, Civil Engineering and Real Estate as an Input Factor in the Defense Sector in Peace and Unstable Global Situations

Jonas Lien
Technical Management Department Head, Forsvarsbygg
This paper introduces the situation reporting approach: an innovative and practical tool that makes it easy to see how existing buildings can be transformed for new purposes. By analysing twelve key spatial and technical parameters and matching them with different functional profiles, situation reporting generates quick adaptability scores for each floor.
Tested on hospital and commercial buildings, the method revealed clear opportunities for reuse and transformation, helping owners make smarter, more sustainable choices. Situation reporting brings circularity, creativity, and data-driven insight together to unlock the full potential of real estate portfolios.

Workshop: Rural FM – Rural Revitalization through Facilities Management for Social Sustainability

Annika Falkstedt | PhD Candidate, Lund University
Lovisa Högberg | Senior Lecturer, Mid Sweden University
Facilitated by Rebecka Lundgren and Riikka Kyrö
Rural areas face growing challenges such as population decline, aging infrastructure, and limited access to essential services. At the same time, they offer great potential for sustainable growth and community resilience. This workshop introduces the concept of Rural Facilities Management (Rural FM)—an approach that applies FM principles to support rural revitalization through social sustainability.
Participants will explore how FM can strengthen community cohesion, improve access to services, and promote equitable, place-based development. Through inspiring examples and interactive exercises, they will gain practical insights and co-create strategies for applying Rural FM in their own contexts—helping make rural areas more inclusive, resilient, and future-ready.

Anja in ‘t Velt | InHolland University of Applied Sciences
Marianne Wenneker | InHolland University of Applied Sciences
Olga van Diermen | The Hague University of Applied Sciences
Anja Fuchs | ZHAW (Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften)
Stephan van der Linden | Zuyd University of Applied Sciences
Join this workshop with the Facility Management Lecturers from the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland and help our future Facility Professionals with skills, knowledge, best practices (or great failures) on how you and your team are taking the next steps to go beyond the standard sustainability practices.
In this workshop we invite participants who are leading the way in sustainability, circularity and especially regeneration. Through your inspiring examples of how it’s done or what challenges to expect, we would like to create a space where you can share and be inspired by others, and together bring those best practices together and share the insights with our students during their Blended Intensive Program. Facility Management students from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and other European countries will collaborate from March to June and will dive deep into what Regenerative FM can mean for them and how to develop the skills to make more impact in the future.
