#5 – Three Associations, One Industry: EuroFM, IWFM & IFMA in Conversation

During this live EuroFM podcast, recorded at the EuroFM Conference in Trondheim, Norway, three leading voices from the global facility management community came together to discuss one of the most pressing topics in the industry today: collaboration across borders.

Representing EuroFM (Natalie Hofman), IWFM (Andrew Hulbert) and IFMA EMEA (Lara Paemen), the panel brought together perspectives from local, European and international levels. What quickly became clear is that, despite different regional contexts, the challenges and opportunities facing facility management are remarkably similar worldwide.

A rapidly evolving industry

The FM sector is changing at pace. Developments in technology, sustainability, wellbeing and hybrid work are transforming the profession, making knowledge sharing and international cooperation more important than ever.

While maturity levels differ across regions, this diversity is a strength. By learning from each other’s approaches, whether in education, certification or operations, the industry can accelerate its development. Even local professionals can benefit from global insights.

From competition to collaboration

A central theme throughout the discussion was the shift from competition to collaboration. Associations increasingly recognise their shared responsibility to support the profession, rather than compete with one another.

Despite being a relatively small sector, facility management has a significant economic and societal impact. This makes alignment and cooperation across organisations essential.

Lifelong learning and new talent

The panel emphasised the importance of continuous development. Facility management offers accessible career pathways and welcomes professionals from diverse backgrounds, at every stage of their careers.

At the same time, attracting younger generations remains a priority. Associations play a key role through student programmes, international experiences and strong professional networks.

The power of partnerships

Partnerships with suppliers, consultants, academics and end users are vital. Associations create platforms where these groups connect, exchange knowledge and build valuable relationships.

Moving forward together

The conclusion was clear: the future of facility management lies in collaboration. By connecting across regions and organisations, the FM community can continue to grow stronger, together.
